Managing unwanted facial or body hair can be a daily frustration when you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). You might find yourself constantly checking for regrowth, or dealing with sore skin from regular removal.
There are ways to make it more manageable. Here, we explain the options and what to expect from professional treatment.
Why does PCOS cause unwanted hair?
PCOS can involve higher levels of androgens, hormones that can encourage thicker, darker hair on the face and body. Common areas include the chin, upper lip and abdomen. Some people also experience thinning hair on their scalp.
Hair removal can help manage unwanted growth, but it does not treat the underlying hormonal condition. Your GP can advise on medical treatments that may help alongside your hair removal routine.
Managing unwanted hair at home
Shaving is a quick, affordable option, and it does not make hair grow back thicker. The blunt end of a shaved hair can simply feel coarser as it grows through.
Waxing, threading and tweezing remove hair from the root, giving you a longer break before regrowth. However, they can cause irritation or ingrown hairs. Hair removal creams can also irritate the skin, so follow the instructions and always carry out the recommended patch test.
If your skin becomes sore, give it time to settle. Use a gentle moisturiser and avoid scrubs or strong skincare products on irritated areas.
Can laser hair removal help with PCOS?
Laser hair removal can help reduce unwanted hair growth, making regular removal less of a chore.
It works by targeting pigment in the hair, so darker hairs generally respond better. White, grey, very blonde and red hairs usually respond poorly. Your skin tone and the equipment used also affect which treatment is suitable.
With PCOS, ongoing hormonal changes can encourage further hair growth. A course of treatments is needed, and you may need maintenance sessions afterwards. Laser offers hair reduction rather than a cure for PCOS.
What happens at a consultation?
We’ll discuss the areas you would like treated, your current hair removal routine and your medical history. We’ll assess your skin and hair, explain whether treatment is suitable and talk through the results you can reasonably expect.
There’s no need to feel embarrassed about asking for help. Unwanted hair is a familiar concern, and you can discuss it privately with us.
If hair growth is new or has increased suddenly, speak to your GP rather than assuming it is caused by PCOS.
